The upper side of the collar was the same color as the peacetime tunic, e.g. dark-blue for the infantry, and the underside took the colour of the tunic collar, e.g. poppy red for the infantry.

Cases of hitting 9-mm pistol bullets at close range without harm to the fighter are described. Steel, due to its smoothness and strength, could also sometimes deflect 7.92 mm rifle bullets and bayonet strikes, but only with a tangential hit at a high angle. Soldiers usually wore this “shell” on a quilted jacket with torn sleeves, which served as an additional shock absorber, despite the fact that the breastplate had a special lining on the inside.
